Every year as a second grade teacher I read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown to my students. They were preparing to write an "important" piece for Grandparents Day. Adorably, many grandparents were appreciated for their fluffy hair or grandma smell. Students wrote about how they enjoyed reading or playing or just cuddling with their grandparents.
The book begins by stating the importance of a spoon:
The important thing about a spoon is that you eat with it.
It's like a little shovel,
You hold it in your hand,
You can put it in your mouth,
It isn't flat, it's hollow,
And it spoons things up.
But the important thing about a spoon is that you eat with it.
Margaret describes the importance of a daisy, the rain, grass, an apple, the wind and sky, a shoe, and she ends with the importance of you:
The important thing about you is that you are you.
It is true that you were a baby and you grew and grew,
and now you are a child and you will grow into a man or a woman,
But the important thing about YOU is that YOU are YOU.
When I ponder the word 'purpose', I can't help but think that God knows the importance of our purpose. He might say,
The important thing about you is that you are mine.
You have been redeemed. You have been washed clean.
You used to wander alone, but now you walk alongside Me.
You are sheltered in my high tower. You are loved and important.
I have a purpose for you that was known before the beginning of the world.
But the important thing about you, is that you are mine.
Psalm 139:16- Your eyes saw my unformed substance;in your book were written, every one of them,the days that were formed for me,when as yet there was none of them.
When God looks upon His children with loving, Holy eyes He sees the person He made in His image. Be becoming that woman every single day. Become more of who you really are in Him so you can fulfill the purposes He planned for you before your substance was even formed.
